We’re delivering Digital Skills St. Helens , a Digital Arts Box CIC project, providing FREE training opportunities in Digital Arts & Technology skills for unemployed adults aged 19+ who live in St Helens and surrounding areas in Merseyside. Digital Skills St. Helens has been made possible thanks to funding from the European Social Fund.

This course is for learners who are interested in gaining a basic understanding of digital photo editing tools and techniques. Great if you are interested in setting up your own business, developing your creative skills for employment or further learning.   

Topics Covered:

  • Fundamental digital photograph editing processes (cropping, colour levels, layers and more)
  • File formats and sizes
  • Basic digital image manipulation techniques (blending methods, masking tools, filters, and more)
  • Create a digitally edited image each week using a combination of the techniques learned throughout the course
  • Identifying career paths in digital photo editing

Through expert tuition, small class sizes, and access to a variety of digital tools and technology, this project will open up a world of opportunities to you when you discover that you can develop the skills necessary to consider a future in the Digital Arts and Technology industry.

What will the lessons be like?

All of the sessions are delivered online (using Zoom) to small class sizes (maximum 10) by two tutors with industry experience. 

How Will I Be Assessed?

This is a non-accredited course, however, linked to the Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA) framework you will be expected to build up a portfolio which will be assessed by your tutor against the course criteria.

There will be a variety of activities and it is a great opportunity to interact with new people. You will be given supportive feedback from your tutor on a weekly basis to help you develop your skills.

During these sessions, you will be encouraged to further enhance your skills and knowledge outside of the classroom, by completing the iDEA (inspiring digital enterprise award) award Silver.

What Are The Entry Requirements?

You will be required to complete some written work as part of this course which will require a good basic understanding of English and Maths. You will also need to be able to work on multiple tabs on a computer at once and have a good basic understanding of using different software packages such as Word (microsoft), Google docs, Pages (Mac OS), internet browsers etc. 

Participants will be required (with guidance, if required) to set up online accounts (e.g. Google, editing software, Adobe).

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Place?

To be eligible to apply for this course you must:

  1. Live in St Helens and surrounding areas of Merseyside
  2. Be aged 19+
  3. Be unemployed
  4. Legally a resident in the UK and able to take up paid employment in an EU member state

Are there any Technical Requirements?

Yes. The course will be delivered remotely (online via Zoom), enabling you to learn from the comfort of your own home. Participants will be required to access Google Classrooms to take part (guidance on setting this up will be provided) so it is essential that students have access to a computer with internet access to participate in the lesson, as well as their own Google/Gmail account.

Weekly sessions will be delivered to you via video conference with your tutor (Zoom). You will need to have access to an additional device with a webcam and microphone to access the video conference.

Items you will need for the course.

Due to the sessions being of a digital nature you will need: 

  • A device connected to the internet, with the Zoom application downloaded which has a webcam and microphone (this could be a computer or a tablet).
  • Another device (Ideally a computer) connected to the internet, with a browser that can load Chrome web browser.

Are There Any Costs?

All of the sessions are completely free of charge thanks to funding from the European Social Fund.

In fact, we will give you a £20 Amazon voucher for successfully completing* the course!

This is an excellent course to guide you whilst exploring digital photo editing techniques. You’ll develop the confidence, skills and knowledge ideal should you wish to look at further education, career opportunities within the field of digital photo editing.
