We’re delivering Digital Skills St. Helens, a Digital Arts Box CIC programme, providing FREE training opportunities in Digital Arts & Technology skills for unemployed adults aged 19+ who live in St Helens and surrounding areas in Merseyside. Digital Skills St. Helens has been made possible, thanks to funding from the European Social Fund.
Learners will gain a basic understanding of website design, planning and development. These sessions are ideal for those interested in setting up their own business and developing creative skills for employment or further learning.
- Understanding basic Internet functions and concepts
- Planning a website’s function, structure and layout
- Developing basic website design skills using WordPress CMS (Content Management System)
- Understanding basic HTML coding fundamentals
- Introduction to graphic design for websites
- Understanding embedding content from other websites
- Identifying career paths in web design
What will the lessons be like?
All of the sessions are delivered online (via Zoom) to small class sizes (maximum of 10) by two tutors with industry experience.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Though this course is non-accredited it is linked to the Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA) framework, so participants will be expected to build up a portfolio which will be assessed by your tutor against the course criteria.
As participants work through a variety of activities there will be many opportunities to interact with new people and supportive tutor feedback will be provided on a weekly basis to help the development of skills. There will also be an opportunity to enroll for the iDEA (Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award) Silver Award.
What Are The Entry Requirements?
You will be required to complete some written work as part of this course which will require a good basic understanding of English and Maths. You will also need to be able to work on multiple tabs on a computer at once and have a good basic understanding of using different software packages such as Word (Microsoft), Google docs, Pages (Mac OS), Internet browsers etc.
Participants will be required (with guidance, if necessary) to set up online accounts (e.g. Google, WordPress).
Who is Eligible to Apply for a Place?
To be eligible to apply for this course you must:
- Live in St Helens and surrounding areas of Merseyside
- Be aged 19+
- Be unemployed
- Legally a resident in the UK and able to take up paid employment in an EU member state

Are there any Technical Requirements?
The course will be delivered remotely (online via Zoom), enabling you to learn from the comfort of your own home. Participants will be required to access Google Classrooms to take part (guidance on setting this up will be provided) so it is essential that students have access to a computer with internet access to participate in the lesson, as well as their own Google/Gmail account.
Weekly sessions will be delivered via video conference with your tutor (Zoom). Access to an additional device with a webcam and microphone for use in the video conference is required.
Items you will need for the course.
Due to the sessions being of a digital nature you will need:
- A device connected to the internet, with the Zoom application downloaded which has a webcam and microphone (this could be a computer or a tablet).
- Another device (Ideally a computer) connected to the internet, with a browser that can load Chrome web browser.

All of the sessions are completely free of charge thanks to funding from the European Social Fund.

What Will This Course Lead To?
This is an excellent course to support you in exploring and gaining basic website development skills and knowledge to help in the setup of a business venture or project.
The course will also support the development of skills for future employment, or should you wish to look at further education or career opportunities within the field of digital marketing and web design.
