Website Design Basics

Course Overview 

This is a course for learners who are interested in gaining a basic understanding of Website design, planning and development. Great if you are interested in setting up your own business or developing your skills for employment or further learning. 

Topics Covered:

  • Understanding basic Internet functions and concepts
  • Planning a website’s function, structure and layout
  • Developing basic website design skills using WordPress CMS (Content management system)
  • Understanding basic HTML coding fundamentals 
  • Introduction to Graphic Design for websites
  • Understanding embedding content from other websites
  • Industry expert guest speaker (Q+A)
  • Identifying Career Paths in Web Design


This course consists of 7 weekly sessions; the first is 1 hour long (to allow for both enrolment and delivery time), and the remaining 6 sessions are 2 hours each.

How Will I Be Assessed?

This is a non-accredited course, however, linked to the Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA) framework you will be expected to build up a portfolio that will be assessed by your tutor against the course criteria.

There will be a variety of activities and it is a great opportunity to interact with new people. You will be given supportive feedback from your tutor on a weekly basis to help you develop your skills.

During these sessions, you will be encouraged to further enhance your skills and knowledge outside of the classroom, by completing the iDEA (inspiring digital enterprise award) award Silver.

What Are The Entry Requirements?

You will be required to complete some written work as part of this course which will require a good basic understanding of English and Maths. You will also need to be able to work on multiple tabs on a computer at once and have a good basic understanding of using different software packages such as Word (Microsoft), Google docs, Pages (Mac OS), internet browsers etc. 

Participants will be required (with guidance, if required) to set up online accounts (e.g. Google, WordPress, Adobe).

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Place?

To be eligible to apply for this course you must:

  1. Live in Halton Borough – Cheshire
  2. Be aged 19+
  3. Be unemployed
  4. Legally a resident in the UK and able to take up paid employment in an EU member state

Are there any Technical Requirements?

All technology and equipment will be provided for the sessions by our delivery partners, so you just need to turn up. Please feel free to bring a pen and notepad with you to take notes.

All of the sessions are completely free of charge thanks to funding from the European Social Fund.

What Will This Course Lead To?

This is an excellent course to support you in exploring and gaining basic website development skills and knowledge, to help in the setup and development of a business venture or project. 

The course will also support the development of skills for future employment, or should you wish to look at further education or career opportunities within the field of digital marketing and web design.
